Emil Nava began directing music videos at the age of 26,the first music video he
directed was a song called Take me back by an artist called Tinchy Stryder. Emil
then went on to direct all of Jessie J's music videos and many of Ed
Sheerans.Emil Nava usually works with current artists in the industry and all of
his music videos have the current theme of being edgy, below are some of the many
music videos he has worked on.
Yoann Lemoine
.
Yoann Lemoine is
another music director however he is also a musician himself and goes by the
name woodkid.Lemione has worked on many other productions such as Arthur and the
invisibles, more recently he has directed the music videos of Katy Perry's
Teenage dream and Lana Del Ray's Born to die.
Wind it up by Gwen Stefani is based on the film the sound Music and songs from the film are also sampled. The majority of the video is narrative rather than performance. Wardrobe consists of a nuns outfit, monochrome and light blues all of which are taken and modernised from the film the sound of music. The style of the video is quite mordern glamous and high budget as you can see from the harujuku girls. The video appeals to a younger audience.
21 seconds by So
Solid Crew is of the garage music genre, there is more performance in this video
compared to Wind it up by Gwen Stefani. The clothes in the video reflect
young, streetwise youths as the style is current with a lot of black, baggy
trousers and hoods. The overall style of the video is quite dark and
glamourising a gangster lifestyle, the group give of quite a 'cool and current'
vibe and this video relates to quite a young audience.
The video for Madonna's like a prayer is a rather ground breaking video as there
are a lot of shocking references that were made at the time such as having a
black man to play the role of jesus.Again, most of this is narrative to help tell
the story of the song and the clothes used in this are quite revealing. The
revealing dress in the video causes controversy as it clashes with the religious
conotations in the lyrics. The video is aimed at a younger audience that are
still forming their own views and opinions on the world, the video may influence
rebellion or a more open view of christianity.
This video is done in the style of a hollywood film, the credits are shown and a
lot of green screen is used to depict the setting of China. There are a lot of
reds and pinks used to indicate an eastern setting and Rihanna is seen wearing
traditional dress. This video, like most is aimed at young people, focusing
mainly on the big production and fashion in the video.
The video for you need me i dont need you by Ed Sheeran steps away from the
usual big production of a music video. It is filmed quite simply in black and
white and there are glimpses of the artist, the main focus is on the other man in
the video who is signing the lyrics. The effect of this is that there is more
emphasis put on the lyrics themselves and less on the wardrobe or artist
singing. The video is aimed at a younger audience but also caters for the deaf.
When we loooked again at our storyboard some scenes were too difficult to
recreate and film and so we cut these ideas and changed them. For example, we
were unable to create the hanging bodies scene we wanted to film because we
could find no practical way of filming this.
After we exported our opening 2 minutes of our
psychological thriller to you tube, we posted it on Facebook, Twitted it and
broadcasted it on BlackBerry Messenger to all of our contacts to get feedback
from our peers/audience on our production, so we can make improvements and so it
is suitable for our target audience.
Positive Feedback
“Overall
the production was excellent”
“The shaking head effect was really good and it
freaked me out”
“I would watch it if it
got produced based on the fact that I think it was on the same levels as
professionals”
“It’s really
good”
Improvements/Criticisms
“Maybe
change the split screen so it is showed all in one, but show the good side of
Dawn (main character in our production) then the evil
side”
“It
might be more effective if you showed Dawn’s evil side through the
mirror"
“Another character so there could be a
murder"
“More footage would have helped me understand your
production more”
“Narration
or subtitles would have made the story line clearer. For example ‘one girl’ ‘one
creepy day’ ‘a world full of secrets’ before Andriana says “shhhh”
The
feedback that we got about mirroring Dawn's evil side through the morror was one
of the problems we encountered when fliming. We tried this effect but it didnt
work in the way we wanted it to, because when we tried to film in a mirror, the angle we had to film it from made it hard to clearly see 'Dawns' facial expressions, so we decided to cut that clip from our final production. Also if we
changed our production so it would be without the split sreen, it would be even
more confusing for the audience.
Another problem we encountered was when we recorded dialogue, the words spoken were not very clear, to resolve this we took several recordings; However each recording had the same problem.
We used a white shirt to represent the characters 'good' side. White normally
portrays purity and innocence. We also used this type of clothing because it was
worn in the era we set our film opening in.The white is also used as a signal
for when Dawn is in her normal state of mind and is aware of what she is doing..
We used the black shirt to represent Dawn's 'bad' side. Black normally portrays
evil and mystery. This was used to convey how Dawn changed from a good, genuine
child to a distorted, psychotic mindset, this contrasts with the white shirt and
works well in the split screen and black and white effect.
We used a black,
long skirt because this was deemed respectable in the era we chose. We decided
to use one skirt instead of having one of both colours because the scenes with
the white shirt used did not need a skirt.
This also portrays
evil mind set and conveys Dawn's unhinged persona.
I added the group institution clip which i had created on www.onetruemedia.com, It was initially just a draft, but we then decided the clip was good to use for our final piece. I crated the images using Adobe Fireworks CS5, The intial idea was pleasable; However a problem i found with using this clip is that the graphics of the animation were of poor quality due to rescaling the image. There was no way that we could have improved the quality without starting the clip again, but this would be time consuming so we left it as it was.
When we began to edit our two minute opening of a thriller film, we saw that there were parts that we filmed that were not steady and were very shaky; this is because of we did not use the tripod properly and we filmed some footage's hand held. We decided to re-film some shots, such as our Establishing shots of a local setting.
We uploaded our film introduction into Adobe
Premier Pro and began the editing process. We wanted to use the black and white
effect to show clearly the two different types of personality our character had.
The black and white filter made our costume choice stand out as the black
represented the ‘dark and deranged’ mood whereas the white symbolised
everything’ good and pure’ about the character. Our editor, Marissa did this by
going into video effects Ã
image control Ã
black & white and dragged this onto our timeline where the effect was
needed. I used black and white for the beginning clips where everything seemed ‘normal’ such as getting dressed and the everyday activities our character can be seen doing.
We used split screen to compare and contrast the
two different frames rather than having it as a long sequence. By using this
effect you could also clearly see the full effect of the black and white
filter.
To Split screen- I clicked on the image clip on the top right corner and rescaled it, I then overlapped another clip and also rescaled it, I put them side by side which created the split screen effect, the lighting was different in each clip so I toggled the opacity of the clips on the timeline by dragging the yellow line up or down to make the lighting on the clips similar. I continued to do this for the scenes where Dawn is getting ready/waking up.
We used flashes of our main character in between
our flowing sequences to add a sudden tensity to our film and hopefully scare
the audience and draw them in to watch more. To do this our editor cropped a
clip which did not have any added effects to.
I
cropped it using the razor tool and dropped the clips onto the timeline in the
specific places.
Thehead shaking was
the hardest and most time consuming part
of our editing due to the fact that both clips had to be visibly seen in order
for it to have the full effect,as well as overlapping both parts of film we
also had to speed up the clip of the actual head shaking because the motion was
too slow for the effect we required.
I overlapped a clip on top of another clip and made pin pointed sections and toggledthe opacity of them to create a shaking head effect which we saw on the T.V program ‘Misfits’ .
We faded out of the head shaking into complete blackness to
separate the film sequence.
I then added a ‘dip to black effect’ at the end (
video transitions à disovle à dip to black and dragged
this effect onto the timeline.
To speed up the one clip of our main character walking
Marissa split a clip using the razor tool but did not crop it, she did this so
that she could increase the speed of the clip for each section to create a
fast, demented walk effect. The speed was increased by 10% at every cut that
was made. There were no specific times at which the video was cut and spedup and this therefore reflects the frame of
mind of which our character is in.
I then used the effect ‘dip to white’ at the end of this
scene to create a ‘flashed’ effect to fade out of our film introduction. I then
cropped some clips and as the character closes her eyes and I added the ‘dip to
black’ effect so the audience feel like they closed their eyes before viewing the
title of our film.
For the music, we researched some songs on YouTube.
We really liked this one:
At first we were going to base our score on this example but then we decided to go with a different 'feel'.
We created the song on a software called 'Reason'
With this software, we were able to create our score. There
were many instruments to choose from which was good for us to explore and
experiment, we decided to use ‘music box’ because it suited our ‘thriller’ and ‘eerie’
theme. We made up a melody on a synthesizer
which could be inserted into a computer and then we copied and pasted that
melody to make a continuous song. We thought it sounded rather repetitive so we
experimented with a higher octave and different notes. When we finished our score, we recorded the
song using software called ‘AV voice changer 4.0 diamond’ so we could convert
it into an mp3 file.
Near the end of the film opening, we added a heartbeat sound.
We were not able to record someone’s heartbeat so we found that particular
sound online; it was copy right free so we were allowed to use it.
At the end, we recoreded me screaming using a voice recording app on an iPhone. We did this so the audience would feel 'thrilled' and wonder what happened to this girl at the end.
These were our initial ideas of where we could film our opening, through process
of elimination we decided upon the two locations that are circled around. The
reasons for choosing these two locations were that we could get permission to
film there and both areas had assets that we could use and would contribute to
our film sequence.
Building 1 (Interior Filming)
We used Chestnuts Primary School Black Boy Lane, London N15 3AS for our interior filming. Collectively we decided that this was a good area to use because there is a large cellar that takes up the entire bottom of the school, the old building also contains many winding staircases and all the original exterior fittings giving an authentic feel to our film. The cellar was extremely dark and had many heavy doors and different compartments giving us a choice of where abouts in the building we wanted to shoot.
Building 2 (exterior filming)
For our external filming we used Oakthorpe Road and an old deserted property on the road. We chose the area because it was covered by large tree's that made the property look secluded and therefore giving an uneasy feel to the area. It was also a large building, similar to the building we used for our interior shots so it didn't look out of proportion on the filming. Nearby, there was also the local canal which we shot because there were swans there at the time, the swans contrasted with the whole idea of our film and so we decided to include them. We took a range of shots of the surrounding area giving us again, a range and freedom to choose which shots fitted best.
The particular house we used was abandoned and in parts, damaged. The effect of this was that it made the building look abused and old. The shutters over the windows gave a sense of secrecy and mystery to the house, as if trying to hide something from possible onlookers. The plants and bushes around the house were over grown and not maintained making the area look manic and out of control. All of our chosen settings use pathetic fallacy in that the mood and state of mind of the character is reflected in the settings.
For our credits we wanted the words to look scary or horror looking, that the usually have in horror / thriller movies. We created our credits in Adobe After Effects CS5 because it is high quality and has a wide range of fonts and effects embedded into the programme. However we looked through the fonts on Adobe After Effect CS5 and we didn't like the ones they had. Also the ones they had didn't suit the genre of our film.
Initially this was the font we wanted to use for our credits. We got this font from 10001fonts.com
Exporting the font to Adobe After Effect CS5 was one of the problems we encountered. So we decided to use a font which was already installed on Adobe After Effect CS5.
My group and I decided to use the font 'Onyx'. We thought this was a good font to use because it is old fashioned looking and structured. However it did not illustrate the distorted and disturbed mind of the character in our production, So we edited it to fit the eerie imagery intended. We also rendered the title a different, and more compelling colour.
We also did this for the credits, Here is the process:
We used an animation called 'Jiggy', which makes the font blurry, and move distortedly around, We found that this set a creepy, unsettling mood. The Jaggedy movement highlights the characters jagged mindset and personality. We looked at many different examples of Opening Credits, we looked at movies such as 'Phsyco' and 'The Orphan'. We were inspired by the way Alfred Hitchcocks credits appeared broken and jagged which had represented state of mind of Norman Bates.
We were also very fond of this example, However it seemed too complex and far fetched to recreate
and we wanted to be original with our production.
This being said, we didn't want our credits to overlap the actual film as it does in the clip above, we wanted the opening credits to alternate so that we could extend our production and so that the audience would focus on both the credits and the filming separately.
Dawn is a 14 year old Orphan who has moved in with her aunty and uncle. She has a split personality but does not know it, by day she is herself; By night she changes.
Andriana is the only cast member of our film opening.
We used Andrianna because she is petite and is a drama student, she will be a good actress for portraying Dawn's charateristics. For instance she has dark hair and dark eyes, which you would associate with the typical character with a dark personality.
We Interviewed members of staff on their opinions of Thriller movies. This benefited us because we obtained useful information that we could incorporate into out final piece.
Friday, 6 January 2012
This is our Shooting Script, we will film according to the instructions shown.
My group devised a rough plot on what our story is about and how we are going to film it, e.g Camera shots used, added editing and how we plan to create our Film opening.
We shot an animatic storyboard to try and visualize what our opening sequence
would look like. Using this method allowed us to view our final ideas as a
moving sequence and spot any mistakes or things that could be adjusted.
This questionnaire helped me get ideas for my Thriller trailer and also helped me improve my initial ideas. Through my results I have learnt that our Thriller clip should appeal to women from ages 15-19. We will combine Thriller with a psychological aspect to appeal to our audience. We should also explore the different camera shots, lighting, music types...Etc, so that we can create a successful product.
This is the questionnaire I devised as part of my primary research. This questionnaire is made up of eight questions which will provide me with a large amount of information to help inspire me and my groups final production.
We made a draft of how our logo may look, I edited it on www.onetruemedia.com
My group and I came up with the logo design and name by combining our last names together. The programme allowed us to make fast samples so it was easier to decide what we
wanted as our final clip.
I created the a slide show of images on paint and then uploaded them onto the website, i also recorded me playing the piano and added it to the clip. I tried to give the clip a 'thriller' feel to it.
The sound quality was bad however this is just a draft of what we want, so in the future i can alter the clip to make suit our expectations.
We then made a spider diagram to show some rough ideas of what would be included.
We created it to show rough ideas of what we would include in
our film.
Some of the ideas in our brain stored, we didn't include into our
film treatment but most of the initial ideas were kept.
For example, the
costume of Dawn (main character). In our brain storm we planned to have Dawn's
hair up but we decided that we would change to it being up to down.
We
kept the codes and conventions the same because it is a vital part for our film.
As our film is a thriller, it is important to have the common codes and
conventions we have seen in thriller movies we
have watched and researched.
We researched different types of Movie ideas and how they portray a thrilling feel to them. We came across movies such as 'Orphan' and 'Childsplay' which both convey the distorted and disturbed mind set of the characters. These movies associate with the plot created by my group and I, which inspired our theme.
I am Marissa Da Costa, I'm studying As Media, my course work is going to be making a 2.00 minute thiller movie.
Our coursework is to produce the beginning of a thriller movie. The
thriller must contain it's own score,a range of camera shots, credits and it
must be 2 minutes long. We must have our own production name and use all of our
own filming and music. Our work must not contain either of us in the
filming.
